Geriatric Psychiatry

Memory loss and mental health care for older adults

Forgetting a name now and then is normal with age. Forgetting recent events, getting lost in familiar places, or a change in personality is not, and should be checked.

Geriatric psychiatry looks after the mental health of older adults. It covers memory loss and dementia (including Alzheimer's and vascular dementia), depression in later life, poor sleep, and confusion that comes on suddenly.

Some causes of memory trouble can be treated, such as low thyroid, low vitamin B12, depression or side effects of medicines. So a careful check comes first. Dr. Abdullah then explains the findings to the family and plans care that keeps the person safe and as independent as possible.

When to book a visit

  • Repeating the same questions, or forgetting recent conversations
  • Getting lost on a familiar route, or trouble handling money
  • Withdrawing from people, low mood or loss of interest
  • Suspicion, restlessness or wandering, especially in the evening
  • Sudden confusion over hours or days, which needs urgent attention

Conditions treated

  • Dementia (Alzheimer's dementia, vascular dementia)

How it works

  1. Memory assessment

Simple memory tests, a review of all current medicines, and blood tests or a brain scan if needed.

  2. Treat what can be treated

Reversible causes such as depression, vitamin deficiency or medicine side effects are corrected first.

  3. Support for carers

Practical advice for the family on daily routine, safety at home, and caring without burning out.

Common questions

Should the older person come in person?

Yes, for the first visit. Please also bring a family member who knows their daily routine well, and all their current medicines.

Can dementia be cured?

Most types cannot be cured, but treatment can help with memory, mood, sleep and behaviour, and good planning makes daily life easier for everyone.
