Liaison Psychiatry

Mental health care alongside physical illness

A long or serious physical illness affects the mind too. Liaison psychiatry treats that side, while working with the doctors who look after your body.

Two doctors reviewing a patient file together beside a hospital bed

People living with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, skin conditions, bowel problems or cancer are more likely to feel depressed or anxious. Sometimes the mind also makes physical symptoms worse, for example stress worsening a sensitive gut.

Dr. Abdullah sees these patients in the clinic and also in hospital, where he helps with confusion during a hospital stay and alcohol withdrawal after surgery or injury. He checks that any medicine he suggests is safe with the treatment you are already on.

When to book a visit

  • Low mood, fear or loss of hope after a new diagnosis or surgery
  • Physical symptoms that tests cannot explain, or that get worse with stress
  • Chest tightness or breathlessness that turns out to be panic
  • Erection problems in someone with diabetes
  • Low mood after childbirth, or severe mood changes before periods
  • Sudden confusion in an older relative during a hospital stay

Conditions treated

  • Confusion (delirium) during a hospital stay
  • Pain without a clear physical cause, and alcohol withdrawal after surgery or injury
  • Erection problems linked to diabetes
  • Depression after childbirth, severe premenstrual mood changes, pain during intimacy
  • Panic attacks that feel like a heart or breathing problem
  • Skin-related worries such as a belief of infestation, or distress about appearance

  • Stomach and bowel symptoms made worse by stress (the gut-brain link)

How it works

  1. Work with your doctors

With your permission, Dr. Abdullah speaks to your physician or surgeon so the plan fits together.

  2. Check medicine safety

Every medicine is checked against your kidney, liver and heart condition and the medicines you already take.

  3. Practical coping help

Short, focused therapy to help you cope with the illness, its treatment and the changes it brings.

Common questions

My doctor said my symptoms are due to stress. Does that mean they are not real?

No. The symptoms are real. Stress and mood can change how the body feels, and treating the mind side often reduces the physical symptoms too.

Can you see a patient admitted in hospital?

Yes. Please call +91-94410 88486 to arrange a visit. The treating hospital team usually needs to request it.
